Alms is likened to something very private and confidential. Until it is said, if the right hand gives charity, the left hand should not know. So the secrecy of giving alms is kept in order to maintain the sincerity of the heart. Because the mathematics of alms sometimes produces things that are far beyond expectations.

The meaning of Alms

Alms have a deep meaning. The true meaning is known to many people, but few are willing to implement it. Not because they can't, but more because they don't want to.

Whereas the meaning of alms according to the Prophet is "Treat those who are sick of you with alms. Verily, charity can quell the wrath of Allah and repel an evil death.” (Tirmidhi)

The Prophet also said: Al-shadaqah tafa'ul bala' which means that charity can reduce disasters. Why? Because alms are to create a good influence that can eliminate bad influences.

The Impact of Alms

Alms is worship that should be hidden. Because the line is so thin between seeking the pleasure of Allah and being proud. It demands true sincerity.

It has been mentioned in the hadith of the Prophet, about alms which can resist calamities or disasters. This is one of the truths of the command to give charity. In addition, there are many positive impacts of giving alms, including:

Generating mahabbah or a sense of love and affection from the recipient of alms because they feel cared for by the giver of alms.

Test your sincerity as the giver of alms.

Refuse reinforcements or disasters, because Allah prioritizes sincere alms.

Generate many opportunities for good, both individually and socially.

Erase miserliness as an inherent human trait.

Increase the purity of your soul.

In fact, when you consider that the essence of the mathematics of charity is beyond your expectations. Because you will actually get more than you ever donate. It seems that you rarely hear that someone is poor because he is diligent in giving charity.

The Essence of Alms in Hadith

From several hadith of the Prophet about giving alms, it can be drawn four essences of giving alms, namely:

  • Can invite sustenance.
  • Refuse reinforcements.
  • Heal your illness.
  • Extend your life.

So primarily charity, to the point where it is said that if you have nothing to give to charity, it is enough for you to give charity with your sincere smile. Although it is easy to live it, it requires sincerity of heart.

As the hadith of the Prophet which says: "Your smile to your brother is charity." It turns out that the mathematics of alms is never wrong and is not rigid. Alms has a broad essence and potential.

Because charity is not always in the form of material. Being kind and polite to parents is charity. Not stingy with family and doing good to children is also charity. Caring for the life of animals and plants is also a charity. And a sincere smile to your brother is also a charity.

It turns out that alms have a wide potential and do not have to be conventional or rigid.

The Most Afdhol Value of Alms

Rasulullah sallallahu 'alaihi wassallam explained in one of his hadith about the most afdhol or most important alms.

Meaning:

"Someone asked the Prophet sallallahu 'alaihi wassallam: "O Messenger of Allah, what charity is the most afdhol?" He replied: "You give charity when you are in good health and in profit, you really want to be rich, and you worry about being poor. Don't delay until the spirit has reached your throat, you just ordered: "For so and so, and for so and so." Even though the property has become the right of so and so (the heirs)." (Narrated by Bukhari)

You can draw the conclusion from the hadith as follows, that there are four criteria for a person to give alms, namely if the person:

Is in good health, capable and still has ambitions to pursue worldly things.

The person really wants to be able and rich.

In an atmosphere of worry to the point of being poor.

Not in a state of near death, to the point of making various wills about the property that will be left behind.

Why are their alms said afdhol? Because the fourth condition is a condition in which a person feels reluctant and heavy to give up part of his wealth to give charity.

And if you are able to fight this reluctance, you are said to have passed the test of Allah Subhanahu wata'ala because you have overcome a trial in the form of giving property by Him. And your alms are afdhol.

So now, start competing in goodness, one of which is giving alms. With alms that always afdhol.
