What is the Meaning of Marriage in Islam? Marriage is one of the oldest human practices. Marriage was carried out by the Prophets since Prophet Adam. and has been taught from generation to generation through religious traditions.

Islam views marriage as something noble and values those who are married as performing worship. Even in a hadith, it is stated that "Getting married is (practicing) half religion."

However in this day and age, societies that tend to be secular are gradually starting to belittle and leave the institution of marriage.

What is the real urgency and meaning of marriage in Islam?

How to deal with today's challenges that tend to undermine marriage?

Answer Sheikh Ahmed Haneef (Islamic Center of England)

Islam views the importance of the institution of marriage from several aspects. The first is the sociological aspect. Marriage is a means of forming society. Because as we know, the foundation of society is family and family is built from marriage.

In this case, husband and wife become biologically a medium for reproduction, namely by giving birth to their children. The special relationship between husband and wife in the family will also foster love and care for the children who will later become components of building society.

Second, a family born from a marriage is necessary for the media to continue and preserve culture, noble values and beliefs. With these noble values, it is hoped that each family member can make a positive contribution to society.

Third, and it seems most important is the metaphysical aspect of marriage. One of them is that marriage is a manifestation of Allah who possesses the attributes of Jalil and Jamil, the Almighty and the Most Gentle.

These two traits that are at different poles are also manifested in marriage. Marriage is a union of two different poles. Male and female. Strong and soft. Because it seems to reflect the perfection of Allah, the Koran calls marriage or husband-wife affection as signs (verses) of His power.

Facing the present trend in which the meaning of marriage is eroded, we must again try to understand the metaphysical aspects of marriage. Don't just look at marriage from the practical aspect of the rights and obligations of husband or wife.

Marriage is worship to glorify Allah, who classifies marriage vows as "mitsaqun ghalizh" or heavy promises, therefore it should not be taken lightly.

Our children really need to have an understanding of the metaphysical meaning of marriage according to Islamic teachings. Such understanding will help them survive the secular undermines which no longer attach importance to marriage.
