The virtues of Tarwiyah and Arafah Fasting and the Practices of Eid al-Adha

Just like fasting Ramadan and other fasts, Tarwiyah and Arafah fasting also has its virtues, one of which is to remove sins.

That is, it is written in the hadith narrated by Ibn An-Najjar and Abdullah bin Abbas that the Prophet Muhammad SAW said as follows.

Fasting on the day of Tarwiyah will forgive sins a year ago while fasting on the day of Arafah will forgive sins for two years (HR Tirmidhi).

Unfortunately, this hadith is stated to be weak or weak. However, the scholars still allow to practice the hadith with the purpose of Fadla'ilul A'mal (to obtain priority) and not associated with the issue of Aqeedah and law.

As for the authentic hadith about the priority of fasting Arafah is narrated by Abu Qatadah Ra

The fast of Arafah day can remove the sins of the past two years and the future, and the fast of Ashura (10 Muharram) removes the sins of the past year (HR Muslim).

Not only that, the priority of fasting Tarwiyah and other Arafah, is to be one of the practices that Allah SWT likes.

According to the narration of Ibn Abbas, Rasulullah SAW said that no deed is preferred by Allah SWT than good deeds done on the first 10 days of the month of Zulhijah.

Also, Allah SWT will give a direct reward and promise two happiness for people who fast, namely happiness when breaking the fast and happiness when meeting with Him.

Reading the intention of fasting Tarwiyah and fasting Arafah and its meaning

Before performing the fast Tarwiyah and fasting Arafah, there is a reading of intention that can be pronounced. Here is the intention of fasting Tarwiyah and its meaning.

نَوَيْتُ صَوْمَ هَذَا اليَوْمِ عَنْ أَدَاءِ سُنَّةِ التروية لِلهِ تَعَالَى

That is, I intend to fast sunnah Tarwiyah because of Allah Ta'ala.

While this is the intention of fasting Arafah and its meaning.

نَوَيْتُ صَوْمَ غَدٍ عَنْ أَدَاءِ سُنَّةِ يَوْمِ عَرَفَةَ لِلهِ تَعَالَى

That means, I intend to fast the sunnah of Arafah tomorrow because of Allah SWT.

Good deeds are done during Eid al-Adha

At the time of Eid al-Adha, there are some good deeds that Muslims can do. Here is the description.

Echoing the Takbir of

Muslims are performed to say Takbir from the setting of the sun (9 Zulhijah) until the beginning of the implementation of Iduladha prayers and ending on the day of Tasyrik, which is 13 Zulhijah. This Takbir can also be done by yourself.

Bathing before the Eid prayer Adha

Ali bin Abi Talib Ra narrated that the recommended bathing is bathing on Friday, the day of Arafah, the day of Eid al-Adha, and Eid al-Fitr (HR Al Baihaqi 3/278).

Wear the best clean clothes and for men to use perfume

Disunahkan to wear the best and clean clothes. For men, it is recommended to use perfume, while women are forbidden to use it. Women should also not overdo it in dressing.

Walking to the place of Ied prayers

When heading to the place of implementation of Ied prayers, we are encouraged to walk to greet each other on the street with other Muslims to strengthen friendship. It is also recommended to leave earlier.

Not eating before the end of

Ied prayers are different from Eid al-Fitr which is ordered to eat before Ied prayers. During Eid al-Adha, Muslims are not encouraged to eat until the Id prayer is over.
